knowledge is power

Feed your brain.

I’m the kind of person that needs to keep my brain active and working in order to feel useful and healthy. If I’m not using my abilities on a regular basis, or learning new skills or applying my talents consistently, I start to feel inadequate or useless. If I become complacent or lethargic and bored, I will inevitably slip into a bit of a depression. For example, being in a position (work) where I am under-utilising my skills and abilities, I will quickly become bored, lose interest and begin to slip away and in return, my work output will suffer. Over-dramatic? Perhaps, but that’s just how I roll.

I’m a self-confessed, self-help junkie. I love learning how to uncover a better version of myself. I love digging deep and peeling back the layers. I love finding new and interesting ways to unearth treasures within myself and my NEW addiction is that I LOVE learning about building an online business.

I started this blog in February 2018 as a means of therapy and to not only free up space in my over-crowded head, but also to grow it into a viable business that I can use to replace my full-time (and part-time) income so I don’t have to rely so much on working 40+ hours a week.

Through my journey so far along the  never-ending learning train of online business know-how, I rediscovered the infinite and endless world of Podcasts.

I am now re-addicted to Podcasts. Go figure.

I used to listen to podcasts daily, then I had switched over to audio books for a bit, but recently gravitated back to Podcasts. It’s a continuous cycle for me.

Why do I flip flop between audio books and podcasts?

Switch up my learning game, babe. I’ve gotta keep things fresh, new, interesting and exciting. I get bored easily. Podcasts are a great way to learn about a variety of things relatively quickly.

I love reading and I have a healthy collection of books throughout my house, but I’m always on the go and not to mention the fact that I’m a sleepy girl so when I do actually slow down, my brain assumes that it is time for sleep and I will inevitably fall asleep no more than 30 seconds after settling into a great book.

I have an extensive library of resources blooming in both my Audible and my Podcast Addict account while my beloved hard and soft cover books gather dust on my bedroom shelves. Keeping my Podcast Library stocked with fresh episodes and my Audible ready to go with pre-downloaded books means I am never too far away from learning something new and interesting.

My top podcast recommendations for building an online business:

Work your brain like you work your booty.

exercise fitness health healthy brain body
Your brain needs exercise as much as your body needs exercise.

Your brain needs a good work out just as much as your body does. Keeping your brain active can help increase your memory functions, keeps your brain from going on auto-pilot and getting bored, helps with vocabulary and your ability to not only recall information, but also be quicker on your feet, not to mention it can help reduce your chances of dementia later in life.

Have you ever thought of something awesome to say about 20 minutes to 5 hours too late? Ya… that happens more than I’d like to admit.

“Dammit!! That totally would have given me the upper hand in that argument.” This usually happens to me the following day while I am in the shower.

Now I don’t know about you, but since having kids… my mommy brain has been horrible. I don’t care what they tell you, you never get that back.

What else can you do to keep those fancy wires in your head firing?

Sudoku, crosswords, puzzles, paint / art / crafts / be creative, memorise phone numbers and grocery lists, listen to music, calculate things in your head (I still use my fingers most days, but shh don’t tell anyone), recite the alphabet backwards. Seriously, try it, it’s a lot harder than I thought it would be. Start a course. Learn something new.

Work that brain like your life depends on it. It’s kind of an important asset to us. We don’t necessarily appreciate our brain until it starts to give us issues, usually by that time it’s relatively too late to start rebuilding things. It’s best to be proactive.

Keep that brain of yours moving. Keep it active.

Be proactive and aware of your mental state.

Here are a couple things you can start doing TODAY to help sharpen your brain skills. This is by no means an extensive list, but it’s a good place to start.

  • Start a mood diary so you can track your moods and emotions each day. Not only will this utilize your brain to recall information about events leading up to your shift in energy, but it will also help you notice patterns. Ex. If you do A, then this happens. Or when you eat C, this happens.
  • Eat healthy fats – Omega-3 Fatty Acids. This is where my health coach background comes out.. (Did you know I was a health and lifestyle coach? Well, now you do) Notice I said HEALTHY fats. Not all fats are created equally, so I’m not saying you should go eat more butter. Healthy fats include seeds, nuts, oils, avocado, fish oils, etc.

Your brain is the fattiest organ in your body and can consist of up to 60% fat. ( Mercola’s Fascinating facts you never knew about the human brain)

If you are not feeding your body adequate amounts of fat, you are essentially starving your brain.

  • Get physically active and work your body AND your brain. Yoga helps calm your central nervous system and balance your energy while giving your body a nice workout.
  • Read. Listen to Podcasts. LEARN. Just keep your brain working.

What’s your favourite way to keep your brain healthy?
